Montage is used by directors to express a certain emotion to an audience. Directors combine certain shots to make the viewer feel tension, anger, powerful, etc. Directors also use montage to convey time passing or to juxtapose multiple feelings, leaving the viewer to have to analyze it on their own. For example, in the movie Clueless, directed by Amy Heckerling, the main character Cher gives the new girl Tai a makeover. The director uses multiple clips of Cher and Tai doing various things, like dying her hair and getting her new clothes, to improver her appearance. The montage builds up an anxious feeling to the viewer as they are excited to see her new look. As the makeover is complete the view feels a sense of happiness and excitement for the characters.
